CALmoto had the good fortune of setting up one of the first BMW HP2 Sports on the West Coast for its debut appearance at the International Motorcycle Show in San Mateo last November. Not an easy bike to keep under wraps, this motorcycle had a crowd gathered around it before it was even out of the crate!
We're anticipating the arrival of our first sold units in the very near future and are set to deliver them to two of our most discriminating riders.
For 2008 we have the real deal. The brand new HP2 Sport. A historic and unique bike with super sport capabilities,
ready for the race track.
Although based on the R 1200 S, the HP2 Sport features many new advancements for the Boxer motor. The bore and stroke is the same. However, there are new high strength, weight reduced forged pistons with similarly new connecting rods. Combined with the new intake pipe system with its short runners, the new motor now develops 130 hp at 8,750 rpm and 85 lb/ft of torque.
The big changes come up top in the complete redesign of the cylinder heads which allow the maximum revs to increase to 9,500 rpm. There are now true Double Overhead cam chain driven cams and 4 valves per cylinder actuated by a drag lever. Another important new feature is that the valves are now radially arranged to allow an extremely compact combustion chamber so that there is no need for a second spark plug. Compression is set at 12.5:1.
The HP2 Sport has a steel tube frame from the R 1200 S adapted to the new single piece and self supporting carbon rear subframe. Front suspension is handled by the tried and true Telelever with Ohlins shock. Rear suspension is the famed EVO Paralever again with Ohlins shock but now with adjustable ride height capability.
To go with the racy suspension, the HP2 Sport has forged aluminum wheels that help reduce unsprung weight. This benefits all aspects of the riding experience especially handling.
Stopping power on the HP2 Sport is without compromise. Single piece, radially mounted four piston brake calipers from Brembo clamp 320mm discs. A double sliding piston handles rear brake duties. All brake lines are steel armored. Also, ABS will be included as an option. The application has been optimized to prevent the rear wheel from lifting under heavy braking. It can also be deactivated.
In order to firmly put the HP2 Sport at the top of the sporting class it comes equipped with many new race features. For example, an adjustable foot peg system comes standard. This system is made of milled, high strength aluminum. An eccentric cam is used to adjust the height of the pegs and to move them forwards or backwards. Continuing with rider comfort, the stock handlebar has adjustable offset with adjustable clutch and brake levers.
One of the more advanced features of the HP2 Sport is the GP dashboard from 2D systems. This new feature has a large, easily readable digital display and works in different modes. It is operated by two switches on the left handlebar. Not only does it display the usual information such as speed, engine rpm, etc., the new 2D dashboard has a race mode screen that provides data about lap times, max revs, top speed or even number of gear shifts. All of this data can then be downloaded to a lap top computer. To complete the racy package, there are eight freely programmable LED's on the upper part of the dashboard that can be used as a rev display or shift light.
